South of LAX and North of El Segundo is one of my favorite neighborhood gems in Los Angeles. Playa del Rey offers beautiful beach bungalows to multi-million dollar 4000+ square foot view homes, this small private enclave community offers something for everyone, and the views from atop the hill span from Santa Monica all the way down to the hills of Palos Verdes. Down near the beach there’s a small strip of homes south of Culver Boulevard aptly named “The Jungle” due to the sidewalks built in between the homes covered in thick green overgrown foliage and luscious bougainvillea that blooms year-round. I love the funky feel of this small community filled with professionals, hippies and start-up entrepreneurs. Tanner’s Coffee Shop is a local favorite along with one of the best Italian restaurants you’ll find on the Westside, Cantalini’s Salerno Beach – a Playa original, and still going strong and offering some of the best homemade ravioli you’ll ever have. My favorite place to meet my hubby for lunch is Playa Provisions, and in the evening there are a few bars within Playa Provisions which change the whole vibe of the restaurant. Playa del Rey offers that chill beach vibe without the bustle of Manhattan Beach. While it used to be a mecca for surfers, the rock jetties that were built to prevent beach erosion have relocated the hot surf spot south to El Porto Beach in Manhattan Beach, so there’s more serenity to be found on the beaches of beautiful Playa del Rey.
